When a Re-Layer Makes Sense — and When It Doesn't

A roof re-layer is one of the most misunderstood options in roofing. Some contractors push it on every homeowner because it's faster and cheaper to install. Others dismiss it entirely. A re-layer is appropriate when your existing shingles are in reasonably good condition (not curling, buckling, or heavily damaged), the roof decking is sound with no soft spots or rot, and there is currently only one layer of shingles on the roof. Indiana building code allows a maximum of two layers — so if you already have two layers, a full tear-off is required.

A re-layer is NOT appropriate when there is significant structural damage to the decking, when the existing shingles are severely deteriorated, when there are active leaks that need to be traced to their source, or when the roof already has two layers.
